The educational mission of the UAB Department of Radiology Residency Program is to not only graduate well rounded radiologists with the capability of performing and interpreting a wide range of radiologic procedures but to also provide a framework for continued life-long learning.

The main goal of this department is to continue to be one of the premier academic radiology programs in the country while adhering to the values of: always having patients well-being of primary concern; maintaining the highest ethical principles in our daily practice; treating, patients, trainees, and colleagues with the utmost respect; continuing to seek to improve ourselves and our profession; to be good stewards of the resources of the state of Alabama and UAB; and to lead by example.

The teaching faculty provides a progressive learning environment with graduated responsibility in an environment of collegiality and camaraderie lasting well beyond the residing training. Residents are provided the opportunity to explore roles in teaching, research, and leadership thus complimenting their imaging curriculum.

The faculty of the department numbers 75 and there are 15 fellows. Of the faculty, 64 are physicians and 11 are physicists, computer scientists or researchers. Teaching and clinical activities are divided into subspecialty areas. 6 faculty members specialize in cardiopulmonary radiology, and 6 in musculoskeletal, 14 in abdominal radiology, 9 in pediatric radiology,  8 are neuroradiologists, 6 work in nuclear radiology, 5 do angiography and interventional work, 4 at the VA, 1 general.
