Interventional Radiology
The development of physiology, radiology and surgery in the 20th century, largely made possible through the use of invasive diagnostic techniques. During the past 30 years, based on diagnostic angiography occurred one of the most rapidly developing branches of modern minimally invasive medicine – interventional radiology. It became the beginning of a new era in the treatment of peripheral arterial atherosclerotic lesions and a basis for further development of percutaneous interventions in different areas of medicine. Due to the talent and ingenuity of scientists, who have launched Interventional Radiology, she is from the application diagnostic specialty into a separate branch of medicine, offering unique minimally invasive therapies.
Since ancient times, doctors are looking at ways of surgical treatment without substantial detriment to the patient. For example, 3000 BC Ancient Egyptians used the percutaneous catheterization of the bladder with metal pipes. Today, medicine is hard to imagine without the so-called methods of minimally invasive surgery or minimally invasive treatment. Under this capacious concept integrates all sparing surgery, which put in front of the same goals as traditional surgery, but do not use with traditional cuts of tissues and organs for quick access. In addition, most of these interventional radiology tests are performed without anesthesia or under local anesthesia.
This area may include endoscopic surgery, endovascular surgery and percutaneous intervention all performed under X-ray or ultrasound guidance. Common to all these is the use of point-surgical approaches, or orifices of the human body and the use of various imaging techniques that allow the surgeon to operate at a considerable distance from the administration tools. The use of miniaturized instruments and high technology, are also hallmarks of this progressive trend in modern medicine.
Minimally invasive surgery is a link between the two poles, always existed in medicine – non-invasive therapy and surgery. It emerged at the intersection of these competing disciplines and, apparently reflects the direction of development of medicine in general. Confirmation of this, is the fact that in this region, today, is equally active as therapists, and surgeons from various specialties.
One of the most exciting and promising areas of minimally invasive medicine is Interventional Radiology. Under this concept is understood by all minimally invasive interventions carried out under the supervision and with the use of radiation imaging techniques (ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI). Interventional radiology is one of the “youngest” of medical specialties, growing at an incredible rate, using the latest technologies and scientific achievements.
It has a short but rich history, thanks to the outstanding innovators, doctors, develop and implement minimally invasive surgery. The history of interventional radiology – is part of the history of several medical disciplines: physiology, radiology and cardiovascular surgery. Methods of minimally invasive treatments have a logical continuation of development of invasive diagnostic techniques.
