Florida Radiology Schools

A career in radiology offers many choices to you depending on your education, so select the radiology school carefully. Florida’s radiology schools are found in public and private colleges and hospitals and grant both certificates and degrees. Several schools in Florida offer degree programs in radiology these days.

Miami-Dade College gives students two associate degree options in radiography and radiation therapy. Nowadays Miami-Dade College (MDC) is the nation’s largest community college. The Medical Center campus offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiography and an Associate of Science degree in Radiation Therapy Technology.

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Radiography

A.A.S. degree program requires candidates to complete introductory health care, CPR and HIV/AIDS courses prior to applying to the program. This is a 2-year, 77-credit-hour degree program. Students start with general education requirements and rudimentary courses in physiology, anatomy and radiography technology. The program’s courses include patient care, positioning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radiation biology. Students are required to participate in clinical studies at associated health care facilities and acquire state General Radiographer licenses.

Associate of Science Degree in Radiation Therapy Technology

This is a 2-year program. Applicants must be graduates of radiographer programs from accredited institutions. Students entering the program are required to be American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) registered. The program allows 57 credits to be transferred into the program. Courses in safety and radiation protection, oncology terminology, human disease and radiobiology make up the remaining 20 required credits. Students participate in observational and supervised clinical practice.

University of Central Florida’s Program in Radiologic Science

The University of Central Florida in Orlando offers a bachelor’s degree program in radiologic science to both incoming freshmen and degree completion transfer students.

Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Science

The 126-credit-hour program begins during the second year, following one year of general education and preliminary courses in physiology and human anatomy. Program courses during the final two years consist of patient care, special and advanced radiology, radiographic exposure management, physics and MRI procedures. Students also participate in clinical rotations during the duration of the program. Graduates must complete at least 25% of the program at the Medical Center campus and maintain cumulative GPAs of 2.5 or better.

A shortened associate to bachelor’s degree program allows students with 2-year degrees in radiology technology from Florida community colleges to continue studies in radiological science. Students entering this program must be certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologies.

Pensacola Junior College

Pensacola Junior College is a public, two-year institution located along Florida’s Panhandle. The college offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in radiography, which requires 23 months of full-time study to complete. Students in the program take courses in communications, mathematics, behavioral or social sciences, physics, anatomy and radiation safety.

Four clinical rotations at area hospitals and other health-care facilities are required for graduation. Financial aid programs include federal and state grants and loans, institutional scholarships, veterans benefits and vocational rehabilitation grants.

Keiser University

Keiser University is a private, for-profit institution with branches throughout Florida.

The college’s Associate of Science program in radiologic technology is offered at its campuses in:

Before enrolling in the program, students must pass a criminal background check and drug screening. Included in the curriculum are classes in medical terminology, patient care, radiation production and imaging evaluation.

Three clinical rotations are required for graduation. Federal loans and grants, institutional scholarships and private lending opportunities are available for qualified students. The Career Services Center offers resume writing, job interview preparation and career advisement assistance.

Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences at Jacksonville

The Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is located in Jacksonville. Students must complete 13 prerequisite credits at Florida State University in Jacksonville in courses such as anatomy, mathematics, physics, computing and social sciences. The school admits 10 students into the program per year and grants a certificate of completion.

Students take classes and complete clinical rotations 5 days per week for 2 years and study:
