Radiology Technician and Technologist Degree

Radiologic technicians and technologists perform diagnostic imaging examination. Radiologic technologists use other imaging modalities such as computed tomography like x rays, mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging while technicians perform imaging examinations.

Radiological technicians are those specialists in healthcare who mostly produce X-rays and administer different nonradioactive materials to patients for purposes of diagnostication. These professionals are not to be confused with technologists in the nuclear medicine, although both fields are somewhat related in terms of diagnostics. Some radiological technicians specialize in certain diagnostic imaging technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) technology.

It is in job description for radiological technicians and technologists to prepare patients for exams, simply explain the x-ray procedure, properly prepare patients for the x-ray, and then position patients in order to make the correct part of the body radiographed. After that technicians take the x-rays, develop and prepare them, and pass them along to a radiologist (a specialist who interprets radiographs) for diagnosis.

Radiologic technicians and technologists must precisely follow physicians’ orders and conform to regulations concerning the use of radiation to protect their patients, their coworkers and themselves from unnecessary exposure.

x-ray_techAlso in addition to operating equipment and preparing patients, radiologic technicians and technologists keep patient records and adjust and maintain equipment. They also sometimes prepare work schedules, evaluate equipment purchases or manage a radiology department.

Most full-time technologists and technicians work 40 hours weeks, although there are also part-time opportunities. Radiologic technologists may have weekend or evening shifts, and may also have some on-call hours, depending on their place of employment.

Formal accredited radiology technician degree programs range between 1 and 4 years, and lead to a formal certificate, or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree (a two-year associate’s degree is the most common program for training.) Hospitals is where most radiologic technologists work, and they prefer to hire workers who have formal training. Experienced health care professionals who wish to specialize in radiological technology, such as CT or MRI diagnostics, can earn a certificate program in the specialization of their choice.

Radiologic technologists need to closely follow instructions, pay attention to the smallest detail, and be able to operate complicated medical equipment.
