Medical sonographers use ultrasound for capturing images that are used in diagnosis. Courses and degree programs which lead to this career include anatomy, science, math, medical terminology, and various anatomical specializations. Students learn to care for patients, operate the equipment, determine which images are satisfactory for diagnosis purposes, and provide patient histories and summaries.

Cuyahoga Community College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Programs
Cuyahoga Community College is Ohio’s largest public community college. CCC’s Parma campus offers diagnostic medical sonography programs that prepare students for certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Students complete general education courses in addition to the diagnostic medical sonography curriculum. Courses include instruction in:

This program is designed for current diagnostic medical sonographers who are seeking advanced instruction in a chosen specialty. Post-degree students may specialize in abdominal, echocardiography, obstetrics/gynecology or vascular technology. The post-degree professional certificate program prepares graduates for entry-level positions as specialized diagnostic medical sonographers.

Owens Community College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
Owens Community College has campuses in Findlay and Toledo. The Toledo campus offers an associate’s degree program in diagnostic medical sonography that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
This program at the School of Health Sciences includes liberal arts, mathematics and science courses in addition to the core diagnostic medical sonography curriculum. Students also complete clinical experiences at Ohio medical facilities that are affiliated with the Medical Imaging Technologies Department at OCC. To earn certification upon completion of the A.A.S. program, students are required to pass the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers exam.

Kettering College of Medical Arts
In addition to anatomy, patient care, morality and medicine, math and other non-technical courses, students in the sonography track at Kettering will take courses in sonographic physics, vascular sonography, abdominal sonography, cardiac testing, echocardiography and other classes targeted to this specific career. University of Rio Grande’s School of Technology
University of Rio Grande & Rio Grande Community College offers both a two-year Associate of Applied Science and a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in diagnostic medical sonography. At the associate degree level, students can elect to study cardiovascular sonography or abdominal, obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound. The baccalaureate program incorporates all of the courses for both associate degrees. Students complete 3-6 clinical rotations prior to graduation, depending on the degree.

Collins Career Center
Collins Career Center offers a two-year sonography program. To qualify for admission to the program, students must complete prerequisite courses in physics, anatomy, algebra, communications, medical terminology and computer science. The program covers techniques for abdominal, gynecological, obstetrical and vascular (ultrasound of the blood vessels) sonography.

Sanford-Brown Institute
Sanford-Brown Institute is a private, for-profit career school. The college offers 2 diploma programs in diagnostic medical sonography: one in cardiovascular (ultrasound of the heart) and vascular sonography and one in abdominal, obstetric and gynecologic sonography. Both programs require around 1 year of full-time study. These programs are approved by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
